Writing Better Blogs
Blogs are very important to the success of many businesses. They provide a way to communicate with consumers, gather feedback, increase brand awareness and influence search rankings.
While promotion is vital to a blog's success, the actual content of the blog will be the deciding factor for readers to return to the website and continue relationships with your business.
Jargon: Keep jargon to a minimum. Jargon alienates potential new readers. Trying to learn something new is extremely frustrating and feeling overwhelmed after a few paragraphs will not encourage your reader to continue. Instead, make the content approachable but every bit as effective. However, some jargon might be valuable, in terms of SEO. If keyword supports this approach, consider using those words in post URLs but leaving them out of the actual copy (or using them very sparingly).
Being Too Cute: On the opposite side of jargon is being too casual. Even if your targeted audience is young and casual, it is almost always a bad idea to step outside of professionalism. Always write posts that are one level above that casual tone, as it positions the blog as an authority figure.
Use Fewer Words: Once your blog post is complete, go back and remove as many words as possible without sacrificing the original meaning of the content. One very common mistake is the over-use of "you" and "your".
Example 1: To ensure a good business blog, you want to make is easy to read so you can convey the appropriate message to your target audience.
Example 2: A good business blog is easy to read while still conveying the appropriate message to its target audience.
Example 2 is easier to read while keeping the original meaning from Example 1.
Get to the Point: Readers of blogs are often short on time, so get to the point quickly by placing the main points of the blog post at the top. Also, search engines index content from the top-down; so you have control over exactly what content is indexed and priority. Keep introductions short and summaries are most effective within the H1 tags for SEO benefits.
Use Citations: Blogging is quickly becoming accepted as legitimate journalism. Therefore, proper citation of facts, figures, sources, etc. will legitimize statements within the blog post. With google's latest update (see last month's newsletter) QUALITY is of utmost importance. Provide the audience reasons to trust your blog and they will come back, link to posts, share the content and help establish your business as an industry leader.
